2nd life will be big when it fulfills a basic human need
There is kind of a hype at the moment around 2nd life. Resident numbers are shooting up as everyone is joining in to this 3d Internet (at present 2,024,984 inhabitants spending US$659,491 in 24 hours). Also big companies, like IBM, are experimenting their b-hinds off to figure out what we have here. Is this a hype or will it become really big?
Second life will be big when if fulfills a basic human need. For example, other big successes for human kind: fire - need to stay warm, housing - need to find shelter, cars - need to transport, Internet - need for information. These are in the physiological and safety belts of the Maslow pyramid.
Some more big successes for human kind: mail, telephone, cell phones - need to communicate, social networking sites - need to belong. These are in the esteem and love/belonging belts of Maslow.
So where do we place second life in Maslow? The following are examples of needs that can be filled by second life: - Need to pretend, you can be who you want to be. - Need to achieve, you can do things better than in real life. - Need to be creative, you can shape the world the way you like it. - And of course the needs that are already filled by the 2d Internet.
It looks like 2nd life offers new chances in the esteem and self-actualization belts. On top of fulfilling traditional needs that are now fulfilled by the Internet 2nd life also better fulfills the higher needs in the Maslow pyramid, which make chances for success pretty good.
Hooray for mankind! We are doing well, because we all get to fulfull the top belts in Maslow as well :-) However, fire is still number one for me...Labels: second life
